Student Introduction

Jayden is a white 6- year old male student in first grade.  Jayden has been diagnosed with a disability since pre-school, and Clayton Partnership school has been very supportive and helpful in the progression of Jayden's disability since his kindergarten. Jayden is currently diagnosed with a learning disability in learning and in math.  I try to work with Jayden as often as possible, to assist him in the teacher's planned activities for the day.  Jayden's average class day consists of  reading activities all morning then lunch, specials(which alternate depending on the day), Writing and finally Math. In the morning the teacher has different ways for the students to be able to practice reading. First she begins them with Reading individually, then with a partner, and lastly with a stuffed animal.

Jayden's Disability is a learning disability  in Math and in Language Arts.  He is very social with other students and has no problem at all completing his work, however this was not always the case. Jayden  was known to be easily distracted in kindergarten, and in distracting his classmates. Since I started my internship I noticed that  Jayden is very focused on completing his task work, because it does take him longer than usual to complete activities compared to his classmates.

Jayden is an only child and lives with his father and mother. His father and mother are very supportive and involved in trying to help Jayden succeed and improve on his disability. I  spoke to his kindergarten teacher, and she let me know that Jayden was an excellent student with a lot of potential. She said left kindergarten with a better understanding on a lot of things and hoped that he would continue to improve. My clinical teacher  pointed out several students with disabilities, but Jayden's  personality was very captivating.  He is very respectful of his peers, the teacher and myself. Jayden enjoy's one-on-one interactions and i knew that he would be the perfect student to observe and work with.

Jayden approaches me on several occasions when i walk around the classroom to assist him with his work, and when I help him he is very often confused on what exactly the class is doing.  I need to often assist Jayden in spelling out words, but Jayden know's his phonetics very well which helps  him in spelling.  Jayden respects me as an intern and sees me as a source of help whenever he needs it, which is very reassuring. In Math Jayden has a difficulty of seeing numbers  clearly. For example, when asked to add 2+3+3  Jayden told me "I do not have enough hands for that, so i need you to help me". Jayden relies a lot on Math manipulatives in order to complete his Math work.

I am hoping to see more improvements in his current IEP in his Learning disability, because Jayden is   a student who is currently trying his best in class to focus as best as he can to improve.
